TreasuryDirect to implement ID.me identity verification

TreasuryDirect is implementing a new login experience through ID.me, a secure government-trusted identity verification provider, starting September 13, 2026. This transition aims to add a layer of security for sensitive personal and financial information during digital transactions.

Users will be prompted to create or log in to an ID.me “Wallet” upon their next visit to TreasuryDirect.gov. While the new system begins in mid-September, the traditional TreasuryDirect login will remain available until October 28, 2026, at which point ID.me will officially replace the old method.

To set up the digital wallet, users will need two forms of government-issued identity, such as a Social Security Number and a valid photo ID like a driver’s license or passport. Users without a smartphone camera can access the ID.me Help Center for assistance. Accounts and investments will remain secure during this transition, and access can be restored by completing the setup process after the October deadline.
