Treaty 6 legacy and First Nations autonomy in Canada

Positive developments include initiatives like the Sturgeon Lake birthing centre, which utilizes traditional parenting practices and protocols. Former Chief Roy Petit of Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation expressed optimism that a deeper understanding of the treaty’s original intent—to share land with the forming Government of Canada—will improve the next 150 years.
