Hungary commemorates 70th anniversary of 1956 Revolution

Global leaders and local communities gathered to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. In Budapest, official ceremonies at the Parliament included speeches by Hungarian President András Baka, Prime Minister Péter Magyar, and international dignitaries such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar described the revolution as one of the most significant events of the 20th century, emphasizing the struggle for freedom and self-determination against Soviet occupation. While the anniversary saw high-level participation, some reports noted a more modest guest list than originally anticipated due to diplomatic tensions and organizational issues.

Commemorations extended beyond Hungary. In Washington, D.C., the Hungarian community held events at the Kossuth House, and in Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk met with Hungarian officials to discuss bilateral cooperation and the importance of honoring shared historical truths. Various local ceremonies also took place in diaspora communities and regional towns to honor the victims of the revolution and the subsequent repressions.
