Treccani publishes volume honoring footballer Gigi Riva

The Italian Encyclopedia Treccani is releasing a new volume in its ‘Miti Italiani’ series dedicated to Gigi Riva, the legendary Italian footballer. The book, which traces his human journey and sporting achievements, will be presented in Cagliari on November 7, the date that would have marked Riva’s 82nd birthday.

Known by the nickname ‘rombo di tuono’ (thunderclap) by journalist Gianni Brera, Riva was celebrated for his devastating left-footed strikes and aerial prowess. Beyond his athletic skill, Treccani highlights Riva as a symbol of loyalty and belonging due to his lifelong commitment to the Cagliari football club, despite being originally from Lombardy.

The volume, written by Riccardo Milani, explores the complexity of Riva as a national myth, intertwining his biography with his symbolic status in Italian culture.
