Treccani reports ‘femminicidio’ as most searched term in 2026

The Treccani Institute has released its list of the most searched neologisms on its digital portal since the beginning of 2026. The term ‘femminicidio’ (femicide) holds the top position, reflecting the social necessity of precisely naming the killing of women due to gender-based violence. This term was previously selected as the word of the year in 2023.

Following ‘femminicidio’ in the rankings are ‘maranza’ in second place and ‘fake news’ in third. The term ‘maranza’ has seen a cultural evolution, moving from a description of urban periphery residents in the 1980s and 90s to its current usage describing loud, conspicuous youth groups. ‘Fake news’ remains a prominent search due to the impact of social media and digital disinformation.

Other highly searched terms include ‘overtourism’, ‘influencer’, ‘smart working’, ‘follower’, ‘rider’, ‘meme’, and ‘selfie’. These searches highlight how digital transformation, social media, and shifting societal behaviors are continuously reshaping the Italian language and its official dictionaries.
