Tree biology: Research on poplar posture and root collar health

Recent botanical research and horticultural guidance highlight how trees manage structural integrity and growth. A study conducted by INRAE and Université Clermont Auvergne, published in New Phytologist, reveals that young hybrid poplar trees possess a form of proprioception. By observing the curvature of their own trunks, these trees can develop tension wood to correct their posture and grow upright, even when traditional gravitational or light cues are removed.

In a separate horticultural context, experts from Utah State University and the University of Maryland emphasize the importance of the root collar, or root flare, during planting. If a tree is planted too deeply, with the flare buried under soil or mulch, it can lead to oxygen deprivation, bark moisture issues, and the development of strangling roots. Monitoring the transition point where the trunk widens into the root system is critical for tree health, especially before seasonal rains.
