Tree protection laws and urban greenery loss in Poland

In Poland, strict regulations govern the removal of trees on private property. As of 2026, owners must adhere to specific rules regarding trunk circumference and species to avoid administrative proceedings and high fines. Trees can be removed without notification only if they meet certain circumference thresholds measured 5 cm above the ground: up to 80 cm for poplars, willows, and certain maples; up to 65 cm for chestnuts, acacias, and plane trees; and up to 50 cm for other species.

Simultaneously, environmental concerns are rising regarding urban greenery management. In Lublin, mature trees in the renovated Park Bronowicki are dying following construction work. The Fundacja Wolności reported that roots were damaged during the construction of a retaining wall by the company Strabag. Despite formal complaints filed earlier this year, city officials have attributed the loss of trees, including poplars and ashes, to heatwaves, drought, and natural aging rather than construction damage.
