TreeTag campaign launches in Ponta Delgada and Vialonga

Several Portuguese municipalities have joined the European TreeTag'26 campaign, an initiative designed to increase visibility for the environmental contributions of urban trees. The campaign uses informative tags on selected trees to educate the public on services such as oxygen production, water retention, and carbon storage.

In Ponta Delgada, an informative plaque was placed on a classified Metrosideros excelsa tree in Campo de São Francisco. This specific tree is noted for producing the equivalent of 271 days of oxygen for one person annually, retaining approximately 92,600 liters of water, and storing 27,500 kilograms of carbon dioxide.

In Vialonga, ten trees in the Parque Urbano da Quinta da Flamenga have been tagged as part of the launch. The municipality of Vila Franca de Xira coordinated the activity with local associations to engage the community and children in learning about urban biodiversity and climate resilience. The campaign in Portugal is coordinated by the Centro de Ecologia Aplicada “Professor Baeta Neves” (CEABN-InBIO) from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia.
