Treeview Cottage renovation brings light to Melbourne terrace

Tsai Design has completed a renovation of the Treeview Cottage in Richmond, Melbourne, transforming a dark, single-storey terrace into a light-filled residence. The project focused on resolving a long, confining corridor that previously dominated the 124 m² footprint.

To improve functionality, the design reworked the primary bedroom into a multi-purpose space using sliding glass doors and curtains for privacy. A new skylight and an exposed timber ceiling structure were integrated to extend light and visual continuity through the hallway. Additionally, the team restored an original fireplace discovered during demolition.

At the rear of the property, the living area's roofline was raised and fitted with two-storey windows. This modification was designed to pull natural light into the interior and frame a mature tree in the rear garden, providing a visual connection to the outdoor space.
