Tremestieri Port project faces delays and funding shortages in Messina
The UIL trade union has denounced the significant delays and financial mismanagement regarding the Tremestieri port project in Messina, Sicily. Despite an official schedule aiming for completion in October, the project is facing critical setbacks.
According to Ivan Tripodi, General Secretary of UIL Messina, land-based works have remained stalled at 50% completion for approximately four months, while maritime works are reportedly at less than 35%. The project has already consumed over 100 million euros in public funds.
The union has criticized the commissioner, Di Sarcina, for a lack of communication and for only recently identifying a funding gap of 11.5 million euros required from the Region, in addition to 7 million euros already funded by the Ministry. There are concerns that approaching winter storms could damage existing maritime works if the project remains unfinished.
