Tren a las Nubes: Argentina's engineering feat in the Andes
The Tren a las Nubes, an iconic Argentine railway, represents a significant feat of engineering designed to navigate the extreme geography of the Andes. Originally conceived as the Ferrocarril Huaytiquina to establish a rail connection between Argentina and Chile, the project eventually shifted focus toward the Socompa pass due to strategic and altitudinal advantages.
Led by American engineer Ricardo Maury, the construction overcame immense challenges, including high-altitude deserts, intense winds, and oxygen deficiency. The route features 1,279 curves, 21 tunnels, 14 viaducts, and over 30 bridges, reaching altitudes of 4,475 meters. To manage the steep terrain without a rack-and-pinion system, the design utilizes innovative maneuvers such as zigzags and loops.
While the original international connection was not realized, the service became a major tourist attraction. Today, the train operates on a limited section between San Antonio de los Cobres and the La Polvorilla viaduct.
