Trenes Argentinos begins payment for 43 new passenger trains

Trenes Argentinos has made the first payment for the purchase of 43 new diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains as part of a railway emergency investment plan. The contract, totaling 324 million dollars, includes the acquisition of 150 passenger cars, spare parts, supplies, and components for three years of maintenance.

The new units are intended for the Roca, Mitre, Sarmiento, San Martín, and Belgrano Sur lines within the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). The first units are expected to arrive by the end of 2027. This marks the first purchase of passenger trains for the metropolitan network since 2015.

According to the state company, the DMU trains are expected to reduce travel times, increase frequency, and improve passenger comfort. Additionally, the new formations are projected to reduce operational costs for the state, as they consume nearly 50% less fuel than current locomotives. The initiative is part of an action plan designed by the Secretariat of Transport under the Ministry of Economy.
