Trenčín leverages European Capital of Culture status for urban renewal
The Slovakian city of Trenčín, serving alongside Oulu, Finland, as a European Capital of Culture, has implemented its ‘Awakening Curiosity’ theme to drive regional transformation. The initiative aims to turn the city and its surrounding region into a vibrant hub for art, creativity, and community collaboration.
Through hundreds of events and initiatives, the project has focused on revitalizing old spaces, expanding cultural experiences, and strengthening connections with Europe. The program is designed as a long-term vision for renewal rather than a single year of celebration, seeking to create lasting changes in the city’s social and physical landscape.
Trenčín, a city of 55,000 residents with a former industrial textile background, has seen increased tourism driven by its historical monuments, including Slovakia’s largest urban castle. The cultural program has successfully re-engaged local residents with public spaces and cultural life.
