Trent Alexander-Arnold midfield role analyzed by Mourinho

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has provided a mixed assessment of Trent Alexander-Arnold following an experimental deployment in midfield during a 2–1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan. Due to suspensions affecting Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler, and Bernardo Silva, the 27-year-old former Liverpool player was tasked with playing in a double pivot alongside Federico Valverde.

Mourinho noted that while Alexander-Arnold interpreted tactical instructions well and worked effectively with Valverde, the player is not a natural midfielder. The manager emphasized that Alexander-Arnold is “more suited” to playing as a fullback, citing the different physical demands and the difficulty of playing with the field in front of him rather than behind him.

During the match, Alexander-Arnold’s performance was inconsistent. While he attempted more crosses than any other Real Madrid player and showed his characteristic passing range, he struggled defensively. His positioning was questioned during Inter Milan’s goal in the 77th minute, leading Mourinho to substitute him for Aurélien Tchouaméni shortly after.
