Trent Whitfield appointed head coach of Providence Bruins

The Boston Bruins have named former player and longtime assistant Trent Whitfield as the new head coach of their AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. Whitfield, 49, spent the past ten seasons on Providence’s staff, helping the club win four Atlantic Division titles and the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy in the 2025‑26 season. His previous coaching roles include assistant positions with the Portland Pirates and the Calgary Hitmen, and he played 812 AHL games with 595 points, serving as P‑Bruins captain from 2009‑13 and appearing in two AHL All‑Star Classics. Whitfield also logged 194 NHL games with Boston, St. Louis, Washington and the New York Rangers.

Alongside Whitfield, Ryan Ward, 39, has been added to the Providence coaching roster as an assistant. Ward most recently coached the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms, guiding them to a Clark Cup championship in 2022‑23, and has held player‑personnel and video coaching roles with several North American clubs.
