Trentino-Alto Adige sees rise in digital payments and decline in cash

A study by the Bank of Italy indicates a significant shift in payment habits within the Trentino-Alto Adige region, characterized by a decline in cash usage and a rise in digital alternatives. The region is among Italy’s most advanced in this transition, recording approximately 300 non-cash transactions per capita.

Growth is particularly evident in the use of payment cards and bank transfers, driven by both physical retail purchases and online transactions. In the Northeast region, the use of alternative payment methods has increased by 93%. Specifically, in Trentino, card usage accounts for about 200 operations per capita, while POS (Point of Sale) terminal usage has reached approximately 2,800 operations per device.
