Trentino Province Cuts Electric Fence Maintenance Period to 4 Years

The provincial wildlife service in Trentino, Italy, has shortened the mandatory maintenance and free‑use period for electric fences used to protect livestock and apiaries from large carnivores. The obligation was reduced from eight years to four years, and the fences – including electrified nets, wire barriers and rechargeable batteries – continue to be provided free of charge or at subsidised cost to professional and hobby farmers as well as beekeepers.

Assessor for Forests with responsibility for large carnivores Roberto Failoni said, "Con questa iniziativa rendiamo ancora più sostenibile l’utilizzo degli strumenti di prevenzione," emphasizing the aim to support farmers and beekeepers with efficient, field‑tested protection. The fences are considered essential for preventing bear and wolf incursions, and their proper use is required for owners to qualify for compensation when wildlife causes damage.

Instructional videos and brochures are available on the province’s dedicated portal to guide users on installation, operation and upkeep, reinforcing the goal of sustainable coexistence with wildlife while safeguarding agricultural assets.
