Treon George dies in His Majesty’s Prison fire

Treon “Chucky” George, a 31-year-old inmate, died following a fire in a maximum-security cell at His Majesty’s Prison. Prison Superintendent Colonel Trevor Pennyfeather confirmed the incident, noting that George was alone in his cell when the blaze began. Two other inmates in nearby cells were treated for smoke inhalation, though they were not inside George’s cell at the time. Authorities are currently investigating how the fire was ignited and how George obtained the necessary materials.

George, who had a history of mental health challenges and previous convictions for aggravated robbery and larceny, was a resident of New Winthorpes. Following the incident, St George Member of Parliament Michael Freeland called for urgent national reforms regarding the treatment of mentally ill individuals within the criminal justice system. Freeland questioned whether prisons are adequately equipped to support inmates experiencing severe psychological distress and emphasized that prisons should not serve as the default institution for mental health care.
