Trepça mine: 63 miners rescued after electrical failure in Stan Tërg

A power failure at the Trepça mine in Stan Tërg left 63 miners trapped underground for approximately eight hours. The incident occurred around 19:30 on October 7, 2026, caused by a malfunction in a 35 kV transformer in the first tunnel.

According to Trepça enterprise, 54 miners successfully evacuated using emergency stairs, while the remaining nine miners stayed underground until power was restored at 02:30. All miners were reported to be in stable health, though one miner reportedly suffered a leg injury during the incident.

The miners' union, led by Ibrahim Januzi, has criticized the incident as a serious safety alarm, citing outdated equipment and a lack of investment in infrastructure and alternative power supplies. The union is calling for an urgent assessment of safety systems and emergency routes.

The Institute for Research and Human Rights (IHDNj) has called for a full and independent investigation by the Prosecutor's Office to determine if there was institutional negligence or violations of safety regulations.
