Tres Cantos mayor requests audit of 200 voters registered via nationality law

The Mayor of Tres Cantos, Jesús Moreno of the People's Party (PP), has formally requested that the Central Electoral Board (JEC) and the National Statistics Institute (INE) audit more than 200 new voters registered in the Census of Spaniards Residing Abroad (CERA).

These registrations were processed through the so-called ‘law of grandchildren,’ which grants nationality to descendants of those exiled from Spain. Moreno argues that Tres Cantos, established as a municipality in 1991 during the democratic era, did not exist during the historical period of exile covered by the law. He contends that the assignment of these voters to the municipality lacks documented justification and suggests there may have been flagrant procedural errors or a lack of oversight by the central government.

The Mayor stated that while the administration respects the right to obtain Spanish nationality, the electoral census must reflect a verifiable link to the municipality. The request seeks an official review of all CERA files assigned to Tres Cantos since 2022 to ensure census integrity for upcoming elections.
