Tretinoin usage and strength comparison guide
Tretinoin is a potent, prescription-only retinoid used to treat acne, fine lines, dark spots, and uneven skin texture by increasing collagen production and accelerating skin cell turnover.
Available in three primary strengths—0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%—the concentration determines both the intensity of the results and the level of potential irritation. The 0.025% strength is considered the gentlest option, often recommended for first-time users or those with sensitive and dry skin. The 0.05% strength is a mid-range option frequently used after skin has acclimated to lower doses, while the 0.1% strength is the most concentrated, offering higher intensity alongside increased risks of dryness and peeling.
Because of its potency, tretinoin is distinct from over-the-counter retinol. In certain regions, such as South Africa, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) regulates retinoic acid, as it is not permitted in ordinary cosmetics.
