Civitella del Tronto Fortress Reopens after €13 Million Restoration
After a six‑year renovation costing nearly €13 million, the Fortezza di Civitella del Tronto in Abruzzo was reopened to the public. Regional president Marco Marsilio inaugurated the site, which now offers full access to its bastions, ramparts, the Museum of Arms and the Museum Nina. The fortress, extending over 25,000 m², is among the largest historic military fortifications in Europe and is expected to boost local tourism as Abruzzo records a 25 % rise in foreign visitors, ranking third in Italy for international tourist growth.
The CGIL labour union highlighted that the contract for managing the fortress’s tourist services was awarded without a competitive tender, valued at €119,400 for a twelve‑month term. The union warned that the lack of a clear, long‑term employment framework leaves the workers who operate the site in uncertainty.
The reopening is positioned as a cultural and economic milestone for the region, aiming to attract visitors year‑round, including night‑time tours, while addressing concerns over sustainable staffing for the monument’s ongoing operation.
