Treviso cricket surge prompts municipal health guidance

Following a wave of citizen reports about large numbers of crickets in the city, the Treviso municipal administration asked the veterinary service of ULSS 2 Marca Trevigiana for a technical assessment. The experts identified the insects as Eumodicogryllus bordigalensis, a species whose rapid urban proliferation is linked to the current hot, dry weather.

The veterinary service assured residents that the crickets do not pose a public‑health threat, as they are not vectors of disease for people or pets. Officials advised simple preventive measures: avoid chemical insecticides, use cooler‑tone LED lighting, seal building cracks, install screens, limit access to basements, and remove dead vegetation that could serve as food. The municipality will continue monitoring the situation, which is expected to subside naturally within about fifteen days.
