Trevor Bauer criticizes Japanese baseball strategy

Former MLB Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer has expressed frustration with Japanese baseball, labeling it “boring” due to specific batting strategies used by players in the NPB.

In a recent social media video, Bauer explained that many Japanese batters prioritize making contact and fouling off pitches over seeking extra-base hits. He noted that certain players appear to have the specific role of extending at-bats to exhaust starting pitchers, often forcing them out of the game by the fourth inning. Bauer estimated that these tactics can add approximately 30 additional pitches to a pitcher's workload.

Despite his criticism of the gameplay style, Bauer praised the technical skill of Japanese hitters. He described their contact ability as “incredible,” noting their exceptional bat control and plate discipline, which allow them to handle high-velocity pitching effectively.

Bauer, who pitched for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars in 2023 and returned in 2025, became a free agent following his most recent stint in Japan.
