Târgu Neamț faces severe water crisis amid infrastructure failures

Residents of Târgu Neamț, Romania, have faced a severe lack of potable water for over two months, leading to public protests in front of the local town hall. The crisis has significantly impacted daily life, forcing students to miss school due to hygiene issues and requiring medical staff at the local hospital to transport water in buckets between wards.

To mitigate the shortage, authorities have deployed 20 water tanks across various neighborhoods, though this supply is insufficient for the population's needs. Local officials have suggested that repairs to the water pipeline may not be completed until February, and they are considering drilling new wells to find additional sources.

Daniel Harpa, President of the Neamț County Council, has declared water supply a “priority zero” for the county. He noted that a primary solution involves a new pipeline from Preutești to Târgu Neamț, but the procurement process is currently stalled due to a legal contestation pending before the National Council for Solving Complaints. In the interim, officials are working to replace a 4,160-meter section of the existing pipeline and are addressing sewage and water issues in other areas including Bălțătești, Săbăoani, Cordun, Bicaz, and Piatra Șoimului.
