Trial begins for 74‑year‑old Nuri Yalçın over Diyarbakır honor killing

On 2 July 2025 in the Bağcılar neighbourhood of Diyarbakır’s Bağlar district, 74‑year‑old Nuri Yalçın shot and killed his 44‑year‑old daughter‑in‑law, Sibel Narin Yalçın. Prosecutors allege he acted on an "honor" motive and sought to conceal the crime. The case was brought before the Diyarbakır 3rd Heavy Penal Court, where the indictment cites "premeditated murder" and "killing a woman" with aggravating factors, demanding aggravated life imprisonment. Testimony included the victim’s grandson who said he saw the suspect praying with a pistol before the shooting, and a neighbour who reported the suspect’s claim of an “honor” motive. The defendant denied recollection of the event, claiming memory loss. The court ordered a psychiatric evaluation and postponed the hearing to 2 October, keeping Yalçın in custody pending further proceedings.
