Günther Paal sentenced to three years for child abuse and possession of illegal material
Austrian cabaret artist Günther Paal, known professionally as ‘Gunkl’, has been sentenced to three years of unconditional imprisonment by the Vienna Regional Court. Paal pleaded guilty to the sexual abuse of a minor and the possession of child sexual abuse material, which included 960 photographs and 19 video files discovered on his electronic devices.
The case also involved the mother and grandmother of the victim, who were convicted of aggravated extortion. Prosecutors stated that the two women used threats of public exposure to extort a total of 159,000 euros from Paal over a period of time.
The Vienna Public Prosecutor's Office has announced it will not appeal the decision, making the sentence legally binding. Paal is expected to receive a formal summons to begin his sentence shortly, potentially at the Sonnberg prison facility.
