Triathlete Erica Fox Killed in Shark Attack off Monterey Bay, California
Erica Fox, a 55‑year‑old triathlete and co‑founder of the open‑water swimming club Kelp Krawlers, disappeared on 21 December 2025 while swimming near Lovers Point in Monterey Bay, California. A large shark was observed by onlookers, and six days later her remains were recovered on a beach near Davenport Beach in Santa Cruz County.
An autopsy released in July 2026 confirmed that Fox died from sharp and blunt‑force injuries caused by a single, powerful bite that broke her pelvis, severed a major artery and caused submersion. The bite left a semicircular pattern of tooth marks from her knees to her abdomen, tearing through her wetsuit. Fox was the only U.S. fatality from a shark bite in 2025 and one of twelve worldwide that year.
The incident highlights the rarity of shark‑related deaths in California, which has seen 16 fatalities over the past 75 years, and underscores the dangers faced by open‑water swimmers.
