Vincent Luis wins 2026 Ironman World Championship in Kona
French triathlete Vincent Luis won the 2026 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in what was intended to be his final professional race. Luis completed the 226-kilometer course in 7:47:27, becoming the first Frenchman to win the prestigious event.
Luis secured the victory following a challenging race that saw several top favorites struggle. Norway’s Gustav Iden finished second with a time of 7:49:03, despite recording the fastest marathon of the day. American Matthew Marquardt took third place in 7:49:59. Both Iden and Marquardt reportedly faced three-minute penalties for drafting violations during the cycling segment.
The competition was marked by significant attrition among the elite field. Leading contender Magnus Ditlev of Denmark was forced to abandon the race during the marathon due to extreme heat, while three-time champion Patrick Lange also had to withdraw. Other notable athletes, including Kristian Blummenfelt and Sam Laidlow, also faced difficulties or failed to maintain their positions in the final stages.
