Abyei region clashes leave 26 dead and 82 injured

At least 26 people have been killed and 82 others injured following days of intercommunal fighting in the disputed Abyei region on the border of Sudan and South Sudan. The violence primarily erupted at the Amiet Common Market.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) reported that the clashes were triggered by the separate killings of a Ngok Dinka man and a Misseriya man earlier in the week. These incidents escalated long-standing tensions between the Ngok Dinka, who are permanent residents, and the Misseriya, nomadic pastoralists from Sudan who migrate through the area during the dry season.

UNISFA has reinforced its security presence around Abyei town and the market to protect civilians and prevent further retaliation. The region remains a highly sensitive, oil-rich territory whose final status has been unresolved since South Sudan's independence in 2011.
