Tricity Metropolitan Bypass reduces regional traffic congestion

Preliminary data suggests the Tricity Metropolitan Bypass (OMT) and new sections of the S6 expressway are successfully diverting transit traffic away from the existing Tricity bypass. Before the OMT opened, projections estimated a 20 percent reduction in traffic volume on the S6 route between the Gdańsk Południe and Gdynia Wielki Kack junctions, dropping from approximately 54,000–55,000 vehicles per day to between 44,000 and 49,000.

The OMT project, which cost nearly 2.8 billion PLN with over 1 billion PLN in EU funding, spans approximately 32 km of expressway. It connects the Southern Bypass of Gdańsk with the S6 Kashubian Route, facilitating smoother transit toward Lębork, Słupsk, and Koszalin while diverting traffic from national roads 7 and 20.

GDDKiA is currently verifying these model values against real-world measurements from the 2025 General Traffic Survey. To improve flow, authorities plan to update road markings at key junctions such as Gdynia Wielki Kack, Chwaszczyno, and Gdańsk Południe. Future infrastructure plans include the reconstruction of the Szadółki and Kowale junctions and the construction of turbo roundabouts at the Straszyn junction.
