Trier court begins trial for triple killing in Cape Verde

The trial has commenced at the Trier District Court for a 19-year-old man accused of murdering three people during a Christmas holiday on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. The victims, identified as the defendant's 58-year-old father, the father's 45-year-old partner, and her 20-year-old daughter, were allegedly stabbed to death in their holiday apartment on December 23, 2025.

Prosecutors have charged the defendant with murder regarding the attack on the daughter, citing the element of treachery as she was sleeping in bed at the time. The charges for the father and his partner are manslaughter, following a struggle in which they sustained numerous stab and cut wounds. The motive for the killings remains unknown, with both the prosecution and the defense stating they currently have no explanation for the incident.

Following the attack, the defendant fled to Lisbon, Portugal, where he was arrested on December 26 and subsequently extradited to Germany in mid-January. During the opening of the trial, the defendant chose not to comment on the specific allegations but provided brief details regarding his personal background and upbringing.
