Germany local elections trigger multiple run-off votes

Local elections across Germany, particularly in Niedersachsen, have resulted in several high-stakes run-off elections scheduled for September 27, 2026. In Niedersachsen, the CDU emerged as the strongest party with 27.7%, followed by the SPD at 24.5%, while the AfD saw a significant increase, reaching 16.5%.

Several municipalities face decisive second rounds. In Delmenhorst, incumbent Petra Gerlach (CDU) faces Alexander Mittag (SPD) in a run-off after failing to secure an absolute majority. In Meppen, Dr. Sigrid Kraujuttis (CDU) and Tobias Munsch (SPD) will compete after the first round. Other notable run-offs include Trier-Land, featuring Michael Holstein (FW) and Christoph Biegel (CDU), and Neustadt, where Rebecca Schamber (SPD) faces Silvia Luft (CDU).

In larger cities like Hannover, Braunschweig, and Oldenburg, candidates also failed to reach the 50% threshold, necessitating further voting rounds.
