Trieste hosts exhibition commemorating Vergarolla tragedy

An itinerant exhibition titled ‘Pola, Ricordi – Vergarolla e le rotte della memoria’ has opened at the Trieste section of the Lega Navale Italiana. The exhibition serves as the first stage of a project promoted by the Gruppo Ermada ‘Flavio Vidonis’ to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Vergarolla tragedy.

Through photographs, documents, and archival materials, the display reconstructs the events of August 18, 1946, when an explosion of ordnance occurred during swimming competitions. The exhibition aims to place the tragedy within the broader historical and human context of the Istrian exodus and the post-war transformations of the eastern Adriatic.

The project is supported by the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. The exhibition will remain open to the public at Molo Fratelli Bandiera 9 until September 30.
