Trifone Altieri withdraws candidacy for ANAC presidency

Trifone “Nuccio” Altieri has withdrawn his candidacy for the presidency of the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC) following intense political conflict between the Italian government and opposition parties. The nomination, initially approved by the Council of Ministers, faced immediate backlash from opposition groups including the Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, and Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra.

Opponents argued that Altieri, a former Lega member and current board member of Leonardo and president of Fincantieri Infrastructure, lacked the necessary independence and impartiality required for the role. Critics also raised legal concerns regarding potential incompatibilities due to his recent political activities. Altieri stated that while he possesses the required qualifications, he decided to withdraw for reasons of political and institutional opportunity to avoid further damaging the image of the authority and the government.

Vice Premier Matteo Salvini defended Altieri, asserting that he met all legal requirements, but confirmed that the government will propose a new name to the Council of Ministers on Monday. The vacancy follows the tenure of Giuseppe Busia.
