Swiss Alps glacier melt reveals bodies of Belgian hikers missing since 1992
The remains of two Belgian mountaineers who disappeared in the Swiss Alps in 1992 have been recovered from the Trift Glacier. The discovery was made on July 26 by a hiker, after melting ice exposed the bodies.
DNA analysis conducted at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Valais Hospital in Sion confirmed the identities of the men, who were 39 and 41 years old at the time of their disappearance. They had been attempting to climb the Weissmies peak when they were lost due to severe weather conditions. While a backpack was recovered during search operations in 1992, their bodies remained hidden for over three decades.
Authorities noted that the discovery is part of a growing trend where retreating glaciers, driven by climate change, reveal the remains of people lost in the mountains decades ago. Similar incidents have occurred recently, including the discovery of a German hiker's remains on the Theodul Glacier in 2023.
