TRIHMS performs Arunachal Pradesh’s first renal transplant

Arunachal Pradesh has achieved a healthcare milestone with the successful completion of the state’s first renal transplant at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun. The procedure was conducted with technical expertise and support from specialists at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu visited the facility to meet the transplant recipient and the donor, who is the recipient's elder sister. Khandu noted that the state government has been collaborating with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for three years to build the capacity of local medical staff. He stated that the success of this procedure demonstrates that TRIHMS doctors and nurses are capable of performing specialized surgeries, which will reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for advanced renal care.

Looking forward, the government plans to expand specialized services at TRIHMS, with cardiology identified as the next major area of focus. Additionally, construction of a new cancer hospital at Midpu is approximately 55 percent complete and is expected to be functional next year.
