Trikafta cuts cystic fibrosis hospitalizations in Brazil's SUS
The triple‑combination drug Trikafta (elexacaftor, tezacaftor and ivacaftor) reduced hospital admissions of cystic fibrosis patients in Brazil's public health system (SUS) by up to 84.8%. The results were presented on 6 August at a meeting of the Sociedade Brasileira de Pneumologia e Tisiologia (SBPT) in Brasília.
More than 2,400 patients are now receiving the therapy through SUS. A year‑long study of 647 children, adolescents and adults across 39 reference centres found a 10‑14‑point rise in lung‑function scores, a 66.7% drop in systemic antibiotic use, and a 91.6% decline in the need for home oxygen therapy. Nutritional status also improved.
In the private market a box of Trikafta costs about R$194,500, and annual treatment can reach R$2.5 million per patient. The medication is dispensed by high‑cost pharmacies with a specialist’s prescription and taken orally at home.
