Trikala inaugurates new Polytechnic Heroes Square

The new Polytechnic Heroes Square in Trikala was officially inaugurated on Sunday evening, marking the completion of a major urban redevelopment project that spanned over four years. The ceremony included musical performances, religious blessings, and a symbolic ribbon-cutting attended by local officials, regional representatives, and citizens.

The project, which covers approximately 5,755 square meters as part of a larger 10,775 square meter redevelopment plan, aims to enhance the city center with increased greenery, shaded areas, water features, and reorganized monuments. The initiative saw continuity across different administrations, having begun under former Mayor Dimitris Papastergiou and being completed under current Mayor Nikos Sakkas and Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas.

While the official ceremony featured a unified message of success from local leaders and the project's architect, the redevelopment has been a subject of long-standing local debate. Discussions among residents have shifted from concerns regarding construction delays and disruptions to debates over the aesthetic and functional choices of the final design.
