Trinamool Congress faces 440 crore freeze on three bank accounts amid internal feud

West Bengal police have placed a debit freeze on three bank accounts of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), blocking withdrawals of roughly ₹440 crore (about $53 million). The action follows a complaint lodged by a group of dissenting TMC legislators who alleged that the funds were obtained through corruption, illegal donations and other illicit means.

The freeze was executed after former party treasurer and state minister Arup Biswas requested the banks to halt transactions, and after the legislators filed a formal complaint at the Bithanagar cyber‑crime police station. The frozen accounts belong to the party's financial wing, and the move comes as TMC grapples with an internal power struggle heightened by a recent audit that revealed party assets exceeding ₹625 crore. Central minister Sukhant Mazumdar has called for the Election Commission to evaluate the large fund pool, and the party announced Subhashish Chakraborty as the new treasurer.

The police clarified that while debit transactions are blocked, credit entries may still be processed, and investigations into the source of the funds are ongoing.
