Trinamool Congress faces factional split and Supreme Court scrutiny

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing a significant internal crisis in West Bengal, characterized by a split into two competing factions. One faction is led by Mamata Banerjee, known as the ‘Kalighat group,’ which relies on her personal popularity and historical legacy. The opposing faction, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, has gained institutional recognition after securing support from several TMC MLAs in the state assembly.

The conflict is intensifying, with both groups preparing to hold separate major events on August 28 to mark the foundation day of the TMC Student Council. This follows previous confrontations, such as the July 21 celebrations.

Simultaneously, the legal implications of the party's internal dissent have reached the Supreme Court of India. The court has issued notices to 20 rebel TMC MPs who joined the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This legal action follows a petition filed by the TMC seeking to disqualify these members, alleging that their move to join the NDA constitutes anti-party activity and a violation of party rules.
