Trinamool Congress turmoil leads to Assam leaders’ resignations

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned, saying the party’s declining prospects in Assam and ongoing defections made it impossible for her to serve the state through the organisation. She described the situation as “a house of cards that started falling apart so fast” and noted that the party’s inability to contain the exodus of MLAs and MPs after the West Bengal assembly election loss left her doubtful about TMC’s expansion plans in Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya and Goa. Dev met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after resigning, stating, “I realised in my five years with All India Trinamool Congress that you may be able to do organisation, being in the Trinamool Congress, I may be able to serve the organisation, but I cannot serve the people.”

Assam Minister Keshab Mahanta confirmed that many TMC leaders are leaving due to internal dissatisfaction, echoing remarks from BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain that “resignations are happening there, and MPs are leaving.” The minister highlighted a series of recent departures, including former Rajya Sabha MPs Prakash Chik Baraik, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Sushmita Dev, marking a growing crisis within the party.
