Trinamool Congress turmoil: rebel MPs seek merger, leaders protest security changes

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Udayan Guha was arrested in Kolkata, marking a high‑profile development in the party’s post‑election crisis.

Twenty rebel TMC MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, submitting a request to merge with the Tripura‑based Nationalist Congress Party of India (NCPI) and to obtain a separate seating arrangement in Parliament. The Speaker has scheduled a meeting with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who missed an earlier summons while appearing before the Enforcement Directorate.

Separately, six TMC legislators loyal to Mamata Banerjee met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, asking that Banerjee’s long‑standing security personnel be reinstated after a reshuffle. The CM said security deployments are standardized and have not been reduced, while the legislators also raised concerns about alleged police harassment of party workers and hawker evictions.
