Trincomalee Hospital begins construction of Rs. 2.4 bn cardiology unit
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has launched the construction of a new eight-storey cardiology unit at the District General Hospital in Trincomalee. The project is valued at approximately Rs. 2.4 billion and is funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The facility is designed to provide advanced cardiac diagnostics, intervention facilities, intensive cardiac care units, and both inpatient and outpatient services. This development aims to decentralize specialized medical services, reducing the need for patients in the Eastern Province to travel to Colombo for heart-related treatments.
The project had previously been delayed for nearly a decade, having been among several JICA-assisted initiatives suspended during the country's economic crisis. Construction is scheduled for completion by May 2028.
