Trinidad and Tobago celebrates 50 years as a republic
Trinidad and Tobago celebrated Republic Day, marking the nation’s 50th anniversary as a republic. The public holiday, observed on September 24, commemorates the country’s 1976 transition from a constitutional monarchy to a sovereign republic, a move that replaced the British monarch as Head of State with a President.
In Roxborough, festivities included a military parade, a regatta in Roxborough Bay, cultural performances, and fireworks. During the celebrations, Tobago and Tobago Administration (THA) Chief Secretary Farley Augustine emphasized that the republic represents the belief that the country belongs to all its citizens rather than a monarch or a privileged few.
Other officials, including Area Representative Orlando Kerr and Member of Parliament David Thomas, highlighted themes of personal responsibility, national identity, and the resilience of the sovereign state. The transition to a republic occurred 14 years after the country gained independence from Britain in 1962.
