Trinidad and Tobago extends scrap metal licensing deadline

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has extended the transitional period for existing scrap metal dealers by one year. Under the Scrap Metal (Extension of Time) Order, 2026, the deadline to meet licensing and statutory requirements has been moved from October 15, 2026, to October 14, 2027.

This marks the seventh extension granted since the industry reopened in February 2023. The Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism stated that the additional time allows dealers to comply with the legislative framework of the Scrap Metal Act, 2022. The Ministry has urged all dealers to submit completed license applications to the Trade License Unit urgently.

In response to previous regulatory deadlines, the Trinidad and Tobago Scrap Iron Dealers Association had previously advised members to suspend operations to ensure legal compliance. Association President Allan Ferguson noted the significant impact such suspensions have on the livelihoods of yard owners, employees, and collectors, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue with the government to achieve a resolution.
