Trinidad and Tobago leaders clash over economic outlook during budget debate

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC has rejected claims that Trinidad and Tobago is in a recession, asserting that the nation is on a path of economic progression. Citing an IMF report, she noted projected growth of 0.8% for the current period, accelerating to 3% in 2027 and averaging 3.5% through 2029.

During the budget debate, the Prime Minister emphasized that government measures are designed to support working and middle-income families by addressing supermarket prices, healthcare, and community safety. She also criticized Opposition MPs for walking out of Parliament, accusing them of abandoning their constituents.

Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles countered these claims, accusing the government of failing to address concerns regarding unemployment and public spending. Beckles cited different economic forecasts, including a projected 2.2% contraction and a 6.6% decline in the energy sector for 2026. She further questioned the government's ability to fund promised job creation programs and criticized the reliance on increased taxation to manage fiscal shortfalls.
