Trinidad and Tobago leaders clash over Independent Senators

Political tension has escalated in Trinidad and Tobago following Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s sharp condemnation of Independent Senators. The controversy arose after all nine Independent Senators voted against the Special Operations Bill, 2026. In response, the Prime Minister labeled the senators “satanic,” “demons,” and “scumbags,” accusing them of siding with criminals, and announced that her government would no longer accept amendments proposed by the Independent Bench.

Opposition Senator Dr Amery Browne criticized the Prime Minister, describing her as a “clear and present danger” to democracy and accusing her of using divisive messaging to target those who challenge the government. Former Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan suggested that the demonization of the senators might be a strategy to undermine public confidence in the Independent Bench to justify future constitutional changes, including a potential shift toward an executive presidency.

Independent Senators Anthony Vieira and Dr Marlene Attzs have defended their roles, with Vieira emphasizing that scrutiny and the ability to propose amendments are fundamental components of the parliamentary process.
