Trinidad and Tobago passes bill raising age limits for alcohol, tobacco and cannabis
The Trinidad and Tobago House of Representatives has passed the Miscellaneous Provisions (Alcohol, Cannabis, Dangerous Drugs, Gambling and Tobacco) Bill, 2026. The legislation seeks to raise the minimum age for the sale, purchase, possession, or consumption of alcohol and tobacco to 21, and the age limit for cannabis and gambling to 25.
Attorney General John Jeremie stated the bill aims to protect young adults and address rising crime and violence. To ensure enforceability, the law requires individuals to present valid national photo identification when accessing these substances or gambling establishments. An amendment also allows persons aged 18 to 20 to handle or sell alcohol and tobacco during lawful employment.
The bill includes increased penalties for offenses such as using cannabis in public spaces or on school premises. It also amends the Registration of Clubs Act to bar those under 25 from club membership, except for specific athletic purposes. While some business interests may oppose the measure due to potential lost sales, the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Industry and Commerce expressed support, citing social and health benefits for youth.
