Trinidad and Tobago Police Service defends mobile units and reports high recruitment

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has defended its use of mobile police units as a vital component of its anti-crime strategy. Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro addressed public criticism, stating that the newly procured micro-police units are upgraded versions of existing concepts designed to offer greater operational capacity and mobility.

These units are deployed using data from the Crime and Problem Analysis Branch to ensure they are positioned to address specific crime trends. Their functions include community engagement, rapid incident response, acting as forward operating bases, and providing command during emergencies.

In a separate development, the TTPS reported significant interest in its latest recruitment exercise, with an estimated 5,000 applicants. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Junior Benjamin noted that despite public criticism of the service, the high number of applicants—including approximately 1,950 at the St. James Police Academy—demonstrates a continued willingness among young citizens to serve.
